VIDEO Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom

I love the special ticket party events at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.  While Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is still my favorite, there is a special place in my heart for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  As a matter of fact, most of my friends prefer the Halloween event over the Christmas one.  Continue reading for my impressions of the event as well as VIDEOS of Madame Renata at the Haunted Mansion, the Headless Horseman, and the “Boo to You” Halloween Parade.

Depending upon when you arrive for the event, the Magic Kingdom will have been transformed.  Moving projections dance along the Main Street buildings.  The announcer let’s you know it’s Halloween time and there is an energy in the air.

Upon entry, you are given a small but tough candy collecting bag.  You can bring your own or buy larger ones in the park.  Candy stations are scattered throughout the Magic Kingdom and they are even handing out candy during the parade.  For most people, they have a full to semi-full bag by nights end.

Trick or treating at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Photo by Ali Nasser © Disney. All Rights Reserved.

I definitely recommend visiting the Haunted Mansion during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Why you may ask?  Because it’s different than normal.  The greenhouse of the mansion is lit in green and purple hues.  The whole mansion is covered in a layer of glowing light with fog throughout the property.  It’s surreal.  And the best part?  Madame Carlotta and her sister Renata periodically come out on the Mansion lawn to talk about their afterlife with guests.  They are simply a hoot and not to be missed.  I waited for Renata to create the video below – I really was shocked that she knew who I was…

I also try not to miss the “Boo To You” Halloween Parade.  The music is repetitive and silly but grows on you – and if you are like me and most others, you begin to really like it.  The parade celebrates most things Halloween with floats and characters you would not otherwise see had it not been for the season.  Right before the parade, the Headless Horseman makes an appearance through the Parade route.  The horse trots along while his headless rider, pumpkin head in hand, ominously wanders through the crowded streets.  I was lucky enough to be in the VIP area on the bridge between the castle and Liberty Square.  There is a lot more interaction with the parade characters here and the headless horseman does a little maneuvering in the spot as well.

There is also a very cool Monsters Inc. Dance party in Tomorrowland and one of the best fireworks displays ever to cap off the night.  The “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks and music are all unique for the event and rely heavily on Disney Villains.  It can be a costly night for a family, yet a time no one would likely ever forget.  If it is in your budget, definitely go without hesitation.  And be sure to dress up as I would say 50% of the guests were in some type of costume.  Some quite elaborate.

Book Review: Lockwood & Co. The Screaming Staircase

Take a little bit of Harry Potter, mix in a young Sherlock Holmes, add a dash of old school Encyclopedia Brown, and you have the basis of Jonathan Stroud’s new series LOCKWOOD & CO.  The first book in the LOCKWOOD & CO. series is The Screaming Staircase, and it’s sure to be a hit with young readers fascinated by mystery with a little paranormal thrown in to boot.  Continue reading for our spoiler-free review of Jonathan Stroud’s LOCKWOOD & CO. The Screaming Staircase.

The book jumps right into the action introducing us to the young Lockwood & Co. team of ghost hunters Anthony Lockwood, George Cubbins, and Lucy Carlyle engaged in a spirited duel with, um…, spirits, that results in the burning destruction of a London homestead.  Solving the case, but losing the house, puts the Psychic Detection Agency on the brink of financial collapse and forces them to accept a dangerous investigation in the mysterious and cursed Combe Carey Hall, location of the sinister Red Room and Screaming Staircase.

The Screaming Staircase is set in a world dealing with “The Problem” – dead return to haunt the living and apparitions continuously appear after dark.  The Problem’s been going on for 40-50 years, and the young serve on the front line of defense because of their extreme psychic sensitivity.  The story is told from Lucy Carlyle’s perspective, and she has been fighting off ghosts and spirits since she was 8 years old.

After the opening scene, the book builds slowly adding layer upon layer of rich detail and building characters.  It’s not until 200 pages into the story the reader first learns of “The Screaming Staircase” referred to in the title.  However, once we discover the aforementioned staircase, the author takes hold, pushes the reader face first into the Red Room to confront all the horrors of the night.  Note, there may be some scary, intense imagery from the ghosts that appear in the final chapters, but tweens and teens will be more than fine and embrace the story.

Kids who love suspense, mystery, and/or ghost stories will be enthralled with this new series by Jonathan Stroud.  Parents may want to read the book first just to make sure it’s appropriate for their youngsters… Mmmmm, hmmm, that’s the reason.  Oh heck, this father enjoyed the book just as much as when he read Harry Potter or The Hunger Games before handing them down to his daughters.  I can’t wait for Book 2 of LOCKWOOD & CO.

Tips and Recap of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights 23 Opening Night

As the approach of autumn brings a chill to the air, Universal Orlando Resort is sending that chill right up your spine.  Re-imagining terror for the 23rd year in the row, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights is a stunning show-case of attention to detail and willingness to terrify. Consisting of haunted houses, mazes, scare zones and other in-depth levels of theming, Halloween Horror Nights 23 is an experience guaranteed to make you scream.  Continue reading for a recap of opening night as well as tips for those attending the event.

We recently had a chance to attend opening night of Halloween Horror Nights 23.  In a pre-event press conference, the Halloween Horror Nights creative team gave an overview of their experiences planning and executing this year’s twenty-third event.  The level of detail and planning they put into each event is so in-depth that even on the first official night of the event, the creative team is already planning their 24th year.

In fact, that level of detail is what made one of this year’s haunted houses possible – a house themed after the film An American Werewolf in London.  During the panel discussion, the director of the film John Landis shared that the HHN creative team had chased him for many years, but it was finally seeing the creative team’s attention to detail that convinced him to collaborate.

John Landis, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of “An American Werewolf in London” visited Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights 23. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

After the discussion, our media group was taken on a R.I.P. tour, allowing us front of the line access to the houses.  As someone who has had to take a chicken exit out of a haunted house before, I was definitely nervous about going into the houses and the scares that were waiting within!  Trust me, no opportunity is missed to scare you anywhere along the lines, whether the scares  come from “scare-actors” that are in the house, lighting effects, bits of scenery clinging  to you, or even just standing in the dark, knowing what’s lurking.

Here is an overview of this year’s houses:

Evil Dead: If you’re a fan of the original Evil Dead series or Sam Rami’s recent remake, you’ll immediately notice how the iconic scenes from the movie have been transformed into real-life horrors.  Whether it’s blood and gore terrors that spray you as you walk by, or demons slipping out from the floorboards threatening to swallow your soul, this house is a terrifying experience. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

The Cabin in the Woods: This was the house I was most excited about when it was first announced and Universal definitely did not disappoint with the elaborate theming.  While the movie is focused on you as an observer, here you become part of the action under the guise of a “camera repair person” needed to fix up life-feed cameras as each member of a group of friends visiting the cabin is sacrificed to appease the gods.  However, you are quickly brought into the action, walking through scenes where the five protagonists cry out for help as murdering red-neck zombies launch themselves at you.  Following the plot of the movie, you must pass through the ending scene in the elevators  to exit the house, getting caught in the melee of that purge as doors open and glass disappears letting creatures loose.  I would be lying if I didn’t say that I high-stepping it to get out of there fast! Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Resident Evil: Escape from Raccoon City: You enter this house in the midst of gun fight between one of the mutated human residents and the hero of the Resident Evil game series, Leon.  As you wind through twisty streets or Raccoon City, you come face to face with more of these zombie-like humans and get caught in the cross-fire as villain Nemesis fires down on your group with his Gatling gun.  Staying true to the game, the house also highlights items intended to help players “survive” the experience. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

An American Werewolf in London: HHN Creative Director Mike Aiello said they wouldn’t have done this house if they knew they couldn’t do it right and it’s clear they went above and beyond in making this a perfect and terrifying experience.  The story begins at the Slaughtered Lamb and continues through a werewolf attack on two friends David and Jack.  Afterwards, you travel through David’s nightmares of becoming a werewolf and ultimately his transformation under the full moon.  The werewolf puppets used throughout the house are shockingly and frighteningly real and the “scare-act0rs” add to terror happening inside this house as they lunge for you out of the aisles and from behind doors. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven: Even if you’re not a fan of AMC’s series The Walking Dead this house is not to be missed.  You enter into the world of the survivors who have been hiding in the West Georgia Correctional Facility.  Walkers are everywhere as you make your way through this house, sometimes trailing next to you and sometimes reaching down from above for you.  Among the most terrifying moments for me was having to crouch and walk through a fenced scene surrounded by walkers on all sides; I felt incredibly vulnerable because I literally couldn’t watch my back.  This house also features a guest-activated effect, so be sure to look for that opportunity to interact. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Urban Legends: La Llorona: As the story draws on a Mexican folk tale, the area has been themed to resemble a Mexican street with an adobe house on it.  As you go through the house, you aren’t just confronted by the horrors of a woman’s acts against her children, but forced to face statues and grave scenes as they come alive.  Ultimately you follow along with La Llorona as she drowns herself as retribution for what she has done. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Afterlife: Death’s Vengeance: This house is where the HHN creative team used 3-D to bring things even more to life.  The first scene you happen onto is Bobby “The Blade” Galletta being executed for several murders.  The effect of the 3D glasses leaves you feeling disoriented and not quite sure what’s actually reaching for you and what isn’t.  As you make your way through a maze of hanging bodies it’s impossible to see a clear way out.  It’s important to note that this house contains a lot of visual effects and light play that might be disorienting for some people. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Havoc 2: Derailed: The original Havoc house focused on super soldiers gone haywire and this house takes it even further – placing you on a train loaded with these soldiers as you have to squeeze by them to make your way through.  The bald-headed super soldiers bang on their cages, kicking, grunting and screaming as they try to reach through and grab you.  And when the train derails they get to escape those cages. Photo by Kevin Kolczynski ©2013 Universal Orlando Resort. All rights reserved.

Our group also visited the show Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure.  The show which is a mix of both music and comedy, opens with a dance number featuring women dressed as sexy versions of murdering villains such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.  The premise of the show is that Taylor Swift, who is dating Ted, has been turned into a blood-thirsty zombie and quickly turns other female celebs into the same, to help her reach her goal of murdering Bill and Ted.  Interspersed with this are various references to pop culture moments from this year, whether it’s twerking zombie Miley Cyrus, Paula Deen or the characters from Duck Dynasty, nothing is safe from being mocked here.  The show also takes a few jabs at Walt Disney films and theme parks.  The show definitely contains some crude language and sexual humor that not everyone may enjoy.

We also made our way through the scare zones.  This year, show director Laura Wallace, focused all the scare zones on various seasons of the Walking Dead.  One of the zones we stopped in, which draws inspiration from the episode Clear, is dim and heavily flooded with fog.  As you walk through the various zombie traps (set up as they were in the show), walkers jump and lunge at you.  Through the darkness and fog it can be tough to tell who’s a walker and who isn’t, which makes it all the more scary.

Overall, I had a fantastic time at Halloween Horror Nights 23 and I definitely enjoyed being startled and scared more than I expected!  The experience was more than just going through a haunted house, with no detail left unplanned by the creative team; it was an immersion in horror, guts and gore that you couldn’t get away from and I loved every second of it!

Here are some tips for people who are attending or considering attending HHN.

Be ready to be scared at any possible second.  Shops, restaurants and bathrooms are safe areas, but almost every place else is fair game.Make sure to read the warning signs for each individual house.  Some areas require bending/crawling, others use strobe lighting and there are some heavy fog effects.Get there as early as you can before lines get too long!  The event starts at 6pm and by 8pm there were already 2 hour long lines for some houses.Universal suggests children be over 11 if they are going to attend.  Know your children and what might terrify them before making any hard and fast decisions.

So have you attended Halloween Horror Nights 23, or one of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights in the past?  Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.  Halloween Horror Nights 23 runs on select nights from September 20 – November 2, 2013.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on Twitter and “like” our Facebook page, too.

Sunglasses and UV Protection – Important for All Seasons

Labor Day has come and gone; the kids are back in school – it’s time to pack up the sunscreen, put away the sunglasses, and break out the sweaters.  Not so fast, a recent report from The Vision Council emphasizes the importance of sunglasses and UV protection during all seasons.  As a runner, I sometimes find myself exercising outdoors squinting into the sun.  Maybe that one 30 minute run is not such a big deal, but The Vision Council report notes the effects of UV exposure are cumulative.  So I’m not getting sunburn of the eye during this short run without sunglasses, but repeated, unprotected exposure to UV rays could lead to eye problems down the line – cataracts, macular degeneration, or even cancer.  Children are especially at risk, and 80% of their lifetime exposure to UV occurs before the age of 18.  Continue reading for more details on the importance of proper sunglasses and UV tips for travelers and those outdoors.

Proper sunglasses are the best UV protection, but 40% of adults are not wearing them.  Furthermore, children’s eyes have increased susceptibility to UV, but over half of parents don’t have their children wear sunglasses outside.  Sure, we remember to slather kids with sunscreen to protect their skin, but their eyes are still vulnerable to the sun’s rays.

UV damage accumulates over time, making it necessary to always wear sunglasses (throughout the year, whenever outside) to minimize exposure.  The effects of improper UV protection could lead to photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye), pterygium (non-cancerous growth on the eye’s surface), cataracts (hardening/clouding of the lens of the eye), macular degeneration (selective death of a dense grouping of photoreceptors in the eye), as well as an increased risk of cancer of the eye and surrounding skin.  Simple wearing of sunglasses with proper UV protection can dramatically decrease the risk of all these eye problems.

In addition to wearing sunglasses, you need to make sure you are wearing the PROPER sunglasses for maximum UV protection.  They should be both UVA and UVB protective – look for a sticker on the lens indicating both types of rays are blocked.  Also, purchase your sunglasses from a reputable vendor.  Beware of street vendors, online auction sites, flea markets, or garage sales, where you can’t confirm the level of UV protection.  Finally, there are many different types of lens options available including photochromic lens that change from lighter to darker with different lighting conditions.  These photochromic lenses would be a perfect choice for me because many of my long distance training runs and races begin early in the morning before the sun comes up and end closer to noon.  Even the clear lenses of the photochromic sunglasses will offer UV protection for my eyes before darkening.  Check out The Vision Council’s Bureau of Missing Sunglasses to learn more about just the right pair of sunglasses for you as well as trip tips, packing lists, and UV indexes for where you may be traveling.

REVIEW: THE LITTLE MERMAID SECOND SCREEN LIVE

For those who have read my reviews before and are wondering about the lack of a spoiler disclaimer, this review is about the experience of The Little Mermaid: Second Screen Live, not the movie itself.  If you’d like a review of the movie, let me know and I’ll post one as soon as possible.  Are you wondering what “Second Screen Live” means?  I certainly wondered.  Second Screen is a Disney app for iPads and iPad minis that allows you to unlock extra content on certain Disney Blu-Ray discs – Cinderella, Bambi, The Lion King, Oz the Great and Powerful, and more.  Disney is now bringing that concept to the big screen (hence the “Live”) creating an experience that allows you to interact not only with the film, but with your fellow audience members, as well.  In order to participate, you need to bring an iPad or iPad mini with you to the theater.  (There was some mention of using it on iPhones, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.)  Before you do go to the theater, though, be sure to download the app, because it’s a large file and will take some time and battery power.

Update September 23, 2013: GIVEAWAY!

We’re giving away a $10 iTunes App Store gift card along with a Disney Junior iPad cover.  The iTunes gift card can be used to download Disney Junior “Appisodes,” or anything else you’d like to download.  Don’t know what an “Appisode” is, then check out this review.  Use the “Rafflecopter” link below to enter the GIVEAWAY until Monday, September 30, 2013.

Original article from September 21, 2013 follows below..

I wasn’t expecting previews at this screening, so I was very excited to get three!  First up, DisneyNature’s BEARS, the seventh film to come out under the  Disneynature label.  (Can you name the first six without googling it?)  I am very excited to see this movie, having seen bears in that area of Alaska in real life.  Look for it to open around Earth Day 2014.  Next up was MUPPETS MOST WANTED, another movie I can’t wait to see (March 2014), because of all the famous stars in it, including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Sam Eagle, Fozzie Bear, Animal (!), Swedish Chef, and, straight off the Disney Fantasy, Pepe the King Prawn (and some other up-and-comers, like Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and some of the popular Disney Channel stars – Debby Ryan, Ross Lynch, Bridget Mendler).  Our final preview was for WALKING WITH DINOSAURS, opening in December 2013, produced by BBC Earth and based on the BBC miniseries.  I’m not sure what the Disney connection is.  I couldn’t find one in my research, but I did learn that parts of this were filmed in the same area where BEARS was filmed.  You can draw your own conclusions.

After the previews, Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel, herself) took us through a tutorial about how to get started, including instructions for the iPad settings (which are different from the iPad mini – do not set your mini to Airplane Mode or you’ll lose wifi access; instead, turn on Do Not Disturb).  You’ll be prompted to start the program, which will go into listening mode and you’ll see “Success” when you’re ready to go.  The app is only available with Apple devices for now.

Flounder and Sebastian started us off by having us choose clams, which then put us on either team (I was on Flounder’s team).  The draw is random and I assume the teams are equal or off by one, if there’s an odd number of participants in the theater.  Ursula puts herself into the game, too, and, suddenly, there’s a much more sinister aspect to the outcome.  Will she beat us?  Will we become poor, unfortunately souls?

King Triton’s castle appears on the iPad screen as the Disney movie starts, mimicking the action onscreen, down to the fireworks.

Throughout the film, we hear Flounder and Sebastian (and, later, Ursula) giving us prompts, as well as a notation at the bottom of the movie screen.  There are several types of point-building games:

Mazes – you have to get from Start to Finish before times up and there are bonus items along the way to build points.

Scuttle Scope – you have to pick out the item(s) in the scenes that don’t belong.

Triton’s Trivia – multiple-choice trivia questions relating to the film

What’s Next – multiple-choice questions about . . . what’s going to happen next

Ursula throws in a few stumpers herself, in an effort to throw us off our games:

Puzzles

and a cheat of maze where the maze timed out before the timer did!  Naughty Ursula!  She also swirled around the theater peering over guests’ shoulders and commenting on their progress.  I hope that feature is available in all theaters – that was a fun addition to the experience.

Disney is all about the well-rounded family experience and Second Screen Live is no exception.  I don’t have pictures, because I was too busy trying to win, but there are several occasions where the only skill necessary is the ability to tap the screen, such as bubble popping and pot and pan banging, so little ones who may not do as well on the mazes and trivia questions, can still bump up their scores.  Ursula offers a similar point-bumper, but hers is a little more slippery – you have to poke the eyes of Flotsam and Jetsam (her eels) to keep them from finding Ariel’s treasure.

Not all of the activities are point-builders, though.  A clear favorite of the children around me was the Crab-E-Oke, with the song lyrics appearing on the app for the children to sing along with the movie.  The lyrics appeared on the big screen, as well, and, for an extra bit of fun, some of the words turned to depictions of those words as they were sung.

Several times throughout the movie, our team scores were shown so that we could see who was ahead.  As I mentioned above, Ursula was cheating (harsh word, I know, but that’s what happened), so Ariel stepped in and joined the game, combining the audience teams into one.  It could be argued that Ariel was cheating, too, but I would argue that once Ursula cheated, the rules changed, so our teams combining to gang up on Ursula was okay under the new rules.  Maybe.  You decide how to explain that one to your kids.  When Ursula fell behind at the end, she sent us the cheating maze seen above, but, in the end, Ariel’s team, aka the entire audience, pulled ahead and beat Ursula.

She was not happy about losing on both screens and took over the app, causing havoc.

Our teams split again so we could see how each team had done.

For our screening, there was a special prize for the individual winner (and a little controversy over who had actually won), but I don’t know if that’ll be offered at every screening of the movie.  I was happy with placing fourth overall, even though my team lost.

This was a very fun evening.  The kids all around were having a great time and every adult I saw was smiling and enjoying themselves.  There were moments when the app distracted from the movie, but you’re not required to play all of the games, though the film was stopped at several points for cheering and the game had a second audio track that played over the film at times, so Flounder, Sebastian, Ursula and Ariel could keep the app going.

This app is clearly designed for movies that have been previously released and will bring people back into the theater a second time to experience the movies in a new way.  It’s also a great way for families with children of varying ages to be able to enjoy a movie together.  Some kids just don’t have the attention span for a feature-length film and Second Screen Live will enable them to either play along with the film or play anything they want on their second screens, because all screens are welcome here.  This will be a great addition to the “baby-friendly” movie screenings which have popped up around the country, giving parents yet another option for bringing small children to the movie and enabling older siblings the opportunity to see movies they couldn’t otherwise see because the little ones couldn’t handle it.

While I had a lot of fun watching LITTLE MERMAID SECOND SCREEN LIVE, I would not want to do this with a movie I hadn’t seen.  Not just because I wouldn’t know the answers to the Trivia and What’s Next questions, but, mostly, because it is distracting from the movie and if I hadn’t seen it, I’d want to watch it all the way through without stopping and losing the connection and momentum of the film.  If they come out with more Second Screen Live options, I’m going to grab my Disney-loving friends (and their iPads) and challenge them.  Loser buys dessert!

So what do you think?  If you’ve seen The Little Mermaid Second Screen Live, what did you think?  If not, do you think this is something you and your family would enjoy?  Leave a comment below and continue the conversation.  For more family movie news, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on twitter and “like” our facebook page too.
