24 Hours in Marrakesh

marrakesh marketMarrakesh is home to enough attractions and curiosities to keep people occupied for several days, but if you only have 24 hours, here is one way to fill your day:

9:00 a.m.

Start your day with a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice while you watch the city begin its day. You can purchase a large glass for around 3 Dh in the Djemaa al-Fna. Next, get your bearings by sauntering over to the Koutoubia Mosque. This building has the tallest minaret in the city and is one of Marrakesh’s most iconic sites. While non-Muslims are not permitted entry to the mosque, everyone is welcome to roam around the gardens.

10:00 a.m.

Take a spin through the souks in the heart of the medina and start shopping for souvenirs. Shopkeepers traditionally gave a discount to the first customer of the day, although usually it’s worth checking out a few stalls before you buy anything.

While it’s perfectly possible to spend the entire day wandering through the souk, make your way to the richly decorated Ben Youssef Medersa, a Quranic school founded in the 14th century. Next door, you’ll find the Museum of Marrakech, housed in a 19th-century palace. The museum boasts classical Andalusian architecture with intricate carvings and tiles, and fountains and mosaics in the central courtyard.

12:30 p.m.

Time for lunch! You can pop in to a small hole-in-the-wall for brochettes—skewered meats served with warm bread—but if you’re in need of a little break, head up to one of the city´s famed roof terraces for a lunch with a view.

2:30 p.m.

After lunch, head over to the Jardin Marjorelle, one of Marrakesh’s most popular attractions. Originally constructed by a French expat during the colonial era, the cobalt blue villa was bought and painstakingly restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé. You can stroll among the plants, which include many different species of cacti, or you can visit the small Islamic art museum before ordering a mint tea and relaxing in the café.

5:00 p.m.

Now it’s time to relax. Marrakesh is famous for its hammam, or bathhouses. They range from cheap and occasionally dingy places without indoor plumbing that cater to locals to spas fit for Moroccan royalty. You can order various treatments from body scrubs with black Beldi soap to mud masks and massages. If you aren’t comfortable with public nudity, some establishments offer private rooms.

7:00 p.m.

After a thorough scrub down, it’s time for dinner. Budget-minded travelers can head back to the Djemaa el-Fna, where vendors set up rows of stalls that dish out hearty local specialties. Otherwise, dine among cosmopolitan locals in the Ville Nouvelle at Al Fassia, Grand Café de la Poste or, if you fancy a break from Moroccan food, at the ever-popular Italian restaurant Catanzaro.

9:00 p.m.

If you’re turning in early, end your day with a horse-drawn carriage (calèche in French) ride around the city. Agree on a price and route beforehand. If your night is nowhere near over, you can start your tour of Marrakesh’s club scene at touristy but atmospheric Le Comptoire or the stylish rooftop SkyLounge. If you’re looking to dance until the wee hours of the night, check out Pachá Marrakech or Theatro.

How to Travel with Kids in Morocco

morocco kidsWith its lively markets and landscapes straight out of motion pictures, Morocco is a magical place in children’s eyes. The compact size of the country and friendly people make traveling with kids enjoyable and rewarding. Though children might tire of typical adult pursuits in Morocco—watching Mom and Dad haggle over carpet prices can’t be too exciting—the fascinating sights and sounds of everyday life makes wanderings both educational and entertaining. Like other countries in the region, Morocco is a very child-friendly culture, and you will likely find hotel and restaurant staff doting on yours.

Consider limiting the scope of travel to one region of the country to avoid long car trips; those endless landscapes that look romantic to adults could seem just, well, endless, to kids in the back seat. The bustle of imperial cities like Marrakech and Fez is anything but boring, and all children will likely find the dunes and camels of the Sahara fascinating. And the easy lifestyle of beach towns on the Atlantic helps families combine downtime in the sun with exposure to a new culture. Destinations particularly popular with families are Essaouira, Agadir, Marrakech and the stretches of the Great Oasis Valleys or High Atlas Mountains that let kids run around in the great outdoors. Older children and teenagers can participate in easy treks and even camping under the stars in the desert.

Some riads seem tailor-made for romantic honeymooners, but plenty are perfect locations for families traveling together. The contained nature of these hotels makes it easy to get separate, but close, rooms, and perks like courtyard pools and family-style dining give riad stays the relaxing, safe feel of staying with a welcoming family.

Moroccan food, with its stew-like tagines, is likely appealing to most children. Before your departure, try out a few recipes or visit a Moroccan restaurant so kids can get familiar with the new types of food. Explain what you might see in a market and point out that, just like in stores in your hometown, they shouldn’t touch merchandise. To get teenagers excited for the trip, consider screening some of the many Hollywood movies filmed in Morocco, such as Lawrence of Arabia.

Though Morocco is relatively safe, its climate and crowded cities can pose some health risks for kids. With very small children, consider child leashes or other safety precautions when navigating busy streets. Remember—these dizzying labyrinths can be disorienting to adults as well! Keep an eagle eye on older children, as the temptation to do a little independent exploring down mysterious corridors might be irresistible.

As kids are more susceptible to illness, make sure to check with a pediatrician about the necessity of hepatitis and malaria vaccines for the region of your travel. Remember that children tend to be affected more quickly by intense sun and very high or low temperatures. Take regular breaks to remind everyone to reapply sunscreen, consider wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses for daytime jaunts and make sure to always have potable water in tow. Lastly, remember that kids, despite their obvious energy, will tire quickly. Schedule low-key indoor time, especially during hot parts of the day, to avoid a kiddie meltdown in the middle of a marketplace. With the right amount of rest, kids will be able to appreciate the magic of a colorful, friendly culture different from their own.

Kids and Car Safety: Four Tips to Stay Safe on the Road

A recent study by Safe Kids Worldwide, a nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping kids safe from serious injuries, found that one in four parents admitted to not properly buckling up their child in a car seat or booster seat during a car trip.  Twenty-one percent of parents surveyed felt it was acceptable to skip buckling up if they were only going a short distance.  As 60 percent of crashes happen within 10 minutes from home, this assumption could have deadly consequences.  Follow these four best child safety practices to keep your kids safe on the road.

Place kids in the right type of car seat, based on his age and weight.  Children under the age of 2 should be placed in rear-facing car seats and moved to a front-facing seat at 24 months.  Use a front-facing convertible car seat until your child weighs 100 pounds or outgrows the size of the car seat, typically around 4 years old.  At this point, switch the child into a booster seat, which can be used until the child reaches a height of 4' 9? or can wear the car seatbelt.  After your child outgrows the booster, let him sit in the automobile’s back seat until the age of 13, at which point he can ride in the front.

Develop the habit of buckling up every time.  Any excuse for not buckling up is just that: an excuse.  So whether you’re taking an overnight car trip or double parking while running an errand, keep all seat belts fastened.

Failure to properly restrain children in seat belts or car seats isn’t the only danger associated with cars:

Children are at risk of heatstroke if they remain in a locked vehicle or sneak into the family car.  Never leave your child alone in a vehicle.Kids may sneak into a car trunk and become trapped, risking heatstroke and asphyxiation.  Always lock the trunk.Children may get their fingers or heads stuck in power windows.  Use the child locks.Your car may roll if left in park with the key in the ignition.  Use the emergency break to prevent this.

If you drive a clunker, your children’s safety is the perfect reason to trade it in for a safer car.  The wide availability of auto financing makes it easier to upgrade to a safer ride.  The safest cars of 2012, according to Forbes, include the Audi A6, Volvo S60, Volvo XC60, Volvo S80 and the Infiniti EX35.  The Audi A6 offers collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and night vision systems that make safe driving even easier.  The Volvo models come with a driver alert system (which suggests tired drivers take a break) and a low-speed collision avoidance system to help city drivers.  The EX35's safety features are similar to the Audi A6's, and the car also has adaptive headlights.

What tips do you have for kids and car safety?  Please share your thoughts in the comments below.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on Twitter and “like” our Facebook page, too.

SeaWorld Rose Bowl Parade Float, Christmas Celebration, and Manatee Rescues

Recently, SeaWorld announced a “Sea of Surprises” float would appear in New York City’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (click here for the announcement and concept drawing).  Well, that wasn’t the only parade SeaWorld set its sights on – yesterday, they revealed concept drawings for a “Sea of Surprises” float coming to Pasadena, California’s 125th Rose Bowl Parade held on New Year’s Day.  In 2014, SeaWorld will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a “Sea of Surprises” at all three theme parks that will include new experiences and shows, more up-close animal encounters throughout the parks and the SeaWorld “Surprise Squad” treating park guests with prizes and special experiences every day.  Continue reading for more details of the float as well as information about SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration and photos of recent manatee rescues and rehabilitations.

“Sea of Surprises” will be the theme of the SeaWorld’s float in the 125th Rose Parade presented by Honda on Jan. 1, 2014 in Pasadena, CA. The marine park’s most popular animals—including killer whales, penguins, dolphins and sea turtles—will be depicted on the float, designed to highlight the fun, inspiration and surprises that guests will find at the park during SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration kicking off next year.

Built by Fiesta Parade Floats and designed by Stanley A. Meyer Design LLC, the SeaWorld float features a little boy, wide-eyed with wonder, who dives beneath a swirling, cresting wave.  The 55-foot floral foaming wave contains more than 20,000 cascading iris and roses and “crash” over a colorful reef, designed with more than 15,000 fluorescent orange roses.  The bright, whimsical coral reef teems with marine animals including starfish, sea horses, turtles, manta rays, crabs and fanciful fish.  Through his ocean exploration, the boy’s fantasy comes to life, in perfect fitting with the Rose Parade’s theme this year, “Dreams Come True.”

“We could not be more excited to have the opportunity to be a part of SeaWorld’s 50th celebration, and what better way to celebrate than on the world’s largest New Year’s Day stage,” said Tim Estes, president of Fiesta Parade Floats.  “An absolutely perfect complement to the theme, “Dreams Come True,” the “Sea of Surprises” float melds the power of connecting to the natural world with the inspiration, fun, and imagination that millions experience when visiting SeaWorld parks.”

SeaWorld Christmas Celebration

Waves of holiday spirit splash over the park during SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration.  Here in a wintery, watery wonderland, guests of all ages will enjoy loads of frosty fun as they watch stunning live shows inspired by the natural world, journey to the North Pole on THE POLAR EXPRESS Experience, then share a smile with a playful penguin at the South Pole while visiting the park’s newest attraction, Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin.  Christmas carols can be heard as guests encounter a sparkling Sea Of Trees and skaters dancing on ice.  With everything from Santa to Shamu, presents to penguins, and elves to Elmo, SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration is where the season meets the sea. Events take place on select dates November 23 through December 31, 2013 and are included with park admission or annual pass.

The SeaWorld Animal Rescue has been celled into action a number of times in early October rescuing a manatee calf from Cape Canaveral (Oct. 15), an adult male manatee from Jacksonville (Oct. 10), and partnering with five other institutions to move five manatees in three days.

An orphaned manatee calf was rescued from the beaches of Cape Canaveral Air Base by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and transported to SeaWorld Orlando.  The estimated two-month-old 90 pound male was spotted on the beach by turtle nesting surveyors near a turtle mound.  SeaWorld placed the calf with three other orphans, who are also receiving rehabilitative care at the park. Manatee calves normally nurse for one to two years.  They depend on their mothers not only for nutrition, but also for learning about feeding and resting areas.  SeaWorld Orlando uses a special formula created by the park’s animal care team specifically for manatee calves to ensure they are receiving proper nutrition

SeaWorld Orlando is also caring for an adult male manatee rescued by the FWC on Oct. 10 just south of Jacksonville, FL.  The animal was spotted floating unusually high in the water and is believed to be suffering from boat strike injuries, among other ailments.  The SeaWorld Animal Rescue Team completed a full health assessment, fitted the nearly 10 foot long manatee with a wet suit — to assist in correcting buoyancy issues and help with surface breathing — and began providing regular tube feedings.

A PIT tag allowed the SeaWorld Animal Rescue Team to identify this animal and learned that he had been rescued once before after becoming stranded near the Matanzas River in St. Johns County, FL.  This manatee and six others were assisted back to the water after getting stuck in a muddy oyster bed in April 2002.  PIT tags are small satellite transmitters the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses to identify and track individual animals in the wild.

Three Rehabilitated Mantaees Head South from Ohio to Florida

One rehabilitated manatee from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden and two from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have returned to Florida.  The moves, which occurred October 11 thru October 13, are part of both zoos’ participation in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Program.

With the help of DHL, the world’s leading logistics provider, the “Sea Cow Shuffle” began on Friday, October 11, when “Woodstock” (Cincinnati) and “Pixie” and “Wheezy” (Columbus) were driven to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to board a DHL flight to Florida accompanied by an animal care specialist and veterinarian from the zoos.  The animals will remain under the care of manatee experts at Miami Seaquarium, SeaWorld Orlando and Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, until winter when they will potentially be released near the areas where they were originally rescued.

At each airport, the manatee crates were placed in an open-top cargo crate that was locked into the cargo hold.  The manatees were kept as far away from engine noise as possible while waiting to be loaded and their crates were loaded last, so that they could be unloaded first after arriving at their destination.

“DHL is especially pleased to be part of this important manatee transfer and rehabilitation project,” said Joe Collopy, regional sales manager at the DHL Express Americas hub in Cincinnati.  “DHL Express has many years of experience, successfully moving live animals around the world all in part to contribute to the zoos’ important work in protecting endangered species.”

Woodstock and her mother were victims of cold stress when they were rescued near the southwest coast of Florida on January 7, 2011.  Woodstock was orphaned and taken to Miami Seaquarium when her mother did not survive.  She weighed 420 pounds when she was rescued and was roughly 938 pounds when she arrived in Cincinnati in January 2013.   Pixie was the smallest manatee to ever come to the Columbus Zoo for rehabilitation.   She was rescued on July 24, 2010 after being spotted alone in shallow water near Daytona.  She was estimated to be just a few weeks old and only 42 pounds when she was taken to SeaWorld Orlando, where she was hand reared by SeaWorld Orlando’s animal care team and cared for at the park’s rescue and rehabilitation center for more than a year before being transferred to the Columbus Zoo.  Pixie is now 673 pounds.  Wheezy was suffering from the effects of cold stress when she was rescued on January 15, 2011.  She was one of three manatees rescued from the Desoto Canal in Satellite Beach that winter.  When she arrived at the Columbus Zoo along with Pixie in November 2011, she weighed approximately 505 pounds; she now weighs 853 pounds.

What to Give as Gifts in Morocco

pashmina scarfWhenever a family member returns to Morocco from abroad, it’s a good bet that half of their luggage is made up of gifts. While Moroccans have access to almost all of the same conveniences as those in the United States, Canada or Europe, the quality is often inferior. Moroccans are well known for their hospitality and generosity and would never act rude or upset if they were not presented with a gift. However, traveling with small items to be given as gifts can get you out of a sticky situation and show your host(s) a little gratitude for their efforts.

What items can be taken to Morocco?

While some gifts can be picked up in Morocco, there are some items that always go over well and are in “high demand” such as:

ChocolatePerfume/colognePashminas or other good-quality scarves or wrapsChewing gum and candyUnique items from your state, especially food items they may not haveColoring books and crayons for younger childrenSoccer ballsDVDs of kids movies

If you’re staying with a family or are invited for dinner in Morocco, it is customary to bring a gift. As mentioned, you will not be treated differently if you don’t, but it is a welcome gesture. If you decide to take items from outside Morocco, make sure that food items do not contain alcohol (as is the case with some chocolates) or gelatin, which is often made with pork.

If there are children in the family, gifts for the children, as opposed to for the adults, are always happily accepted. Soccer balls, which can be deflated before flying and pumped up once you’ve arrived, are a welcome gift for any boy. DVDs, dubbed in French if possible, are also a good idea for children. If you are visiting a family as a couple (husband and wife/ boyfriend and girlfriend), it is acceptable to bring perfume and cologne. However, single women visiting a family should not give cologne as a gift. Perfume for your hostess, however, is okay.

What items can be bought in Morocco to gift?

Maybe you didn’t have plans to visit a family before you left your home country but now you’re in Morocco and have been invited to someone’s home for a meal. This scenario happens more often than you may think. If you need to pick up a gift on the go, here are a few ideas:

FlowersCookiesScarvesSoft drinksGift baskets

What you can find in Morocco will vary a lot on where you are. In a large city, you’ll have no problem finding the items listed but in a more rural area it can be difficult. Cookies are always a welcome gift and often this is what Moroccans give each other when visiting for a meal. While an increasing number of families in Morocco drink soft drinks, they don’t do so frequently. This is a great idea and the children of the family will love you for it! If you go the gift basket route, consider filling it with several small items your hostess would enjoy. Incense, small food/snack items, a new pair of babbouche (Moroccan slippers), a tin of sugar cubes or some tea could all be included.

Having small gifts in the ready is a great way to break the ice and start a new friendship on the right foot. If you’ve forgotten all of these suggestions and find yourself a guest at someone’s home, there’s one key question to ask: What would you like to receive? Moroccans are the same as everyone else and any gesture put forth will be met with thanks.

Mount Zalagh in Morocco: Tranquility among the Olive Groves

morocco olive treeMount Zalagh looms high over Fez, looking down on the crowded city and its narrow, winding alleys. A world away from the hustle and bustle of one of the most densely populated areas in Morocco, Mount Zalagh, covered with olive groves and scented by wild lavender, offers a view of the entire city and the surrounding landscapes—the Sebou Valley, Rif Mountains and Sais Plain. In the winter, expect snow, but in the summer, the elevation provides the ideal temperature for an escape from the heat and the perfect spot for a picnic. Despite its proximity to the city, it is never crowded, much to the delight of mountain bikers and hikers alike.

Reaching Zalagh’s summit is easy enough for even inexperienced hikers and takes no more than an hour or two, even at a leisurely pace. To reach the mountain, take a grand taxi (taxi kabir in Arabic) from the Bab Guissa, a 12th-century city gate located in the north of the medina. You can usually count on finding a taxi queue in front of the Sofitel Palais Jamaï nearby. Ask the driver to take you to the base of the Mount Zalagh or, in Arabic, Jbel Zalagh (JE-bal ZA-lagh), along Ouezzane Road, which is to the left after leaving the Palais Jamaï and leads to the southern base of the mountain. You reach a small pine forest, from which you can find the trailhead. As always when taking a grand taxi, agree on a price beforehand. The trip should normally cost no more than 7 or 8 Dh, so make sure to bargain.

The mountain’s climate and elevation coupled with rocky soil is best suited to traditional crops like almonds, figs and olives and for pasturing goats and sheep. The area around Mount Zalagh boasts many large modern farms together with smaller family farms that produce some of the world’s best olive oil.

Once you’ve reached the top, if you’re ready for more hiking, you can follow a trail for about an hour that eventually leads to a plateau high above the Sais Plain. The plain surrounds Fez and is one of the most fertile areas in Morocco. Here, French colonialists invested a great deal of money and equipment to properly irrigate the plain and make it suitable for the cultivation of grapes. Although viticulture is not exactly huge business in Muslim Morocco, the area still boasts Morocco’s best wines, and also supplies the country with grains and fruits. From this vantage point, you can look out over the entire plain, the city of Fez and the Atlas Mountain chain, whose peaks are often covered in snow.

Recently, there have been rumors of new development on Mount Zalagh swirling around Fez. This brings mixed reactions, since easier access to the mountain means more day-trippers. Either way, it’s sure to remain a respite from the city’s busy rhythm.

VIDEO Glow With the Show at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

After the amazing GLOW WITH THE SHOW spectacle at Fantasmic! a few nights ago, the premiere of the light up Mickey ears at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was less than stellar. If you missed it, click here to watch the VIDEO highlights of the GLOW WITH THE SHOW debut at Fantasmic!  This is not to say I did not enjoy the experience, but expectations had been set and were not met.  Unlike the Fantasmic! debut, no ears were given out to “seed” the audience.  I would say less than 10% of the people had the special interactive Mickey Ears.  Another thing against this debut is that Main Street is rather flat compared to Disney’s Hollywood Studios Fantasmic! stadium.  So unless you were tall, there was less to see.

But all is not lost – I had a tall friend and a monopod with me and we were able to get up around 10 feet (estimate) to bring you some great shots of what did occur.  Take a look at the GLOW WITH THE SHOW enhanced Celebrate the Magic projection show on Cinderella’s Castle.

Unfortunately, during the last 2 minutes of the Celebrate The Magic Castle Projection show, the GLOW WITH THE SHOW ears ceased functioning.  I am guessing the signal somehow did not get out to the ears.  This small glitch was fixed a few minutes later when Wishes! GLOW WITH THE SHOW premiered.

I still love the idea and the technology and hope you enjoy what I was able to capture on video!

What do you think of the new technology?  Do you think it adds to the experience of Disney’s nighttime spectaculars?  Are you willing to pay $25 a piece for the special interactive GLOW WITH THE SHOW Mickey ears?  Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on Twitter and “like” our Facebook page, too.

VIDEO Fantasmic Glow With The Show Debuts at Walt Disney World

…and then it happened!  Everyone was blinking in coordination with the show and for that time, we were all part of the collective that is DISNEY! :)   Yesterday, October 15th, 2013 marked the 15th anniversary of Fantasmic! and Disney’s Hollywood Studios used the anniversary as the first night to roll out the GLOW WITH THE SHOW Light Up Mickey Ears here on the East Coast.  Continue reading for VIDEO highlights of the debut of Fantasmic Glow With the Show.

The Glow With the Show Ears have been in the West Coast parks for some time now and their use, as most things, has some controversy.  Some people see them as annoying and/or distracting while others just wish more folks had them.  Apparently, at around $25, they are not as popular as Disney or their guests would like them to be.  I will tell you, when a lot of people have them, the experience is nothing short of surreal.

Fantasmic Glow with the Show

We arrived at the Fantasmic theatre wondering if ears would be given out.  I mean, it is the first night and their cameras were all ready to broadcast a live feed.  Surely, they would want it to look great, right?

My friend Jeff, for reasons he knew all too well, suggested we do all we could to sit in the Mickey section.  I figured because it was right in the middle.  He knew it was because this was where Disney would focus most of their attention if anything special were to happen.  We noticed a smattering of ears around us and then about 30 minutes prior to showtime, cast members with bags of hats were making their way through our section.  Before long, EVERYONE in our section had Mickey ears.  And to the little girl in front of me whose ears were OFF the entire show, you irked me.  I wanted to reach over and turn them on but it was dark and I realize I can appear threatening in the wrong light LOL.

Some Light-Up Ears made their way to other sections as well, but only a few – I would say about 200 pairs were given out although rumor is that as many as 600 were.  Interesting to note the ears given out were the old ones from California complete with a World Of Color sticker they asked us to remove.  Not that they were used ears, but they were new old ones if you get what I mean.  The newer ones have a rim of cushion around the inside and the mechanism to activate the ears is slightly different.  If you have a large head, you may prefer the older ones.

My experience was joyful.  When it first began, that is me you hear in the video laughing.  I was having the time of my life and I won’t forget it.  I was told it would NEVER look this good again because of the giveaways.  I can only hope!

Morocco Travel for the Cosmopolitan Visitor

morocco restaurant clubDoes your ideal vacation prioritize art galleries and architecture over adventure? Would you rather sip cocktails than scale sand dunes? Does your travel itinerary look better with art deco-style buildings, museums and discos? Then Morocco is calling you.

Casablanca

Travelers have long ignored Casablanca in favor of more local exotic, but what the city lacks in Islamic monuments and labyrinthine souks, it makes up for in its dizzying nightlife, a burgeoning art scene and a hodgepodge of architectural styles. Casablanca's inhabitants, known as Casablanca, are known for being more Western in their attitudes. You can find men and women together in restaurants and bars dressed up in the latest global trends.

In the 1930s, art deco style was all the rage in Paris and New York, famously represented by the Paris Métro and New York's Chrysler Building. The style caught on in Casablanca, and you can see some of the many art deco buildings in the Place Mohammed V and Place November 16. Galleries abound, featuring both Moroccan and international artists, including The Studio of the living Arts, Gallery workshop 21 and Loft Gallery, along with Amber Gallery, located in the high-end suburb of Mohammedia. The non-profit group Casamémoire runs a variety of projects including an exhibition space housed in an abandoned slaughterhouse on the edge of town.

While nightclubs and lounges such as Arts Club Lounge, Le Carré and The Empire are perennially popular for dancing and people watching, Casablanca also stands out for its private beach clubs, such as Tahiti Beach and Atlantic Beach.

Rabat

As the capital city, Rabat is home to government officials, foreign diplomats and university students, which give the city's orderly and tree-lined streets a staunchly conservative feel. Gone are Casablanca's traffic jams or Fez´s people jams. Instead, Rabat boasts a state-of-the-art tram system and an overall relaxed vibe.

Gallery CMOOA is an obvious stop for art lovers, as are The Cube and the Space Expressions CDG. The Fondation ONA oversees the Art Villa, a complex dedicated to contemporary art. It is composed of several buildings that each focus on a particular artistic discipline, such as sculpture, theater and painting.

Rabat also has two botanical gardens: the Test gardens, located in the middle of the city and a welcome respite to the summer's heat (currently under renovation), and the stunning exotic Bouknade gardens, about 12 miles outside of the city.

Marrakesh

Marrakesh can easily claim the title of Morocco's most cosmopolitan city. Movie stars routinely pop up into the city's numerous luxury hotels, including the Four Seasons, W, La Mamounia and the Riad El Fenn, owned by the wife of Richard Branson. Fans of the Sex and the City franchise can stay at the Taj Palace Marrakesh, featured in SATC 2.

The city's nightlife can give most Western cities a run for its money (with prices to match). Asian-inspired Bo - zin is popular right now, but rooftop bars like Skybab at the Bab Hotel and SkyLounge at the Delano Hotel, offer stunning views of the city and the nearby Atlas Mountains. You can end your night at Pachá Marrakech gold you can party all day at Nikki Beach.

Along with beautiful people, Marrakesh is also full of beautiful art. Matisse Gallery is widely regarded as the city's most established gallery, but those interested in local artists should check out The Gallery blue and Gallery 127.

Quest of the Maggie at Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains

“I’m going Questing!” was the phrase heard repeatedly during our summer vacation at the Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains.  Maggie, our 15 year old daughter, was particularly excited to try out MagiQuest (she had read all about it online), and loved immersing herself in this world of wizards, fairies and magic.  I noticed she wasn’t the only one swept up in the Quest.  Circles of wizards wandered the halls of the lodge throughout the day.  They flicked their wands here, pointed their wands there, and the groups developed a camaraderie after passing repeatedly on their respective Quests.  Because Maggie spent so much time playing MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains, she agreed to share what she thought of the game.  With that, I turn it over to Maggie.

Great Wolf Lodge Poconos MagiQuest

If you don’t know, Magiquest is an interactive game that can be played in Great Wolf Lodges across the country.  Basically, you purchase a wand and then you pay to activate your game (at least $15 for the wand and $15 dollars for the game).  The game involves quests and adventures.  You point your wand to activate objects around the lodge and they will interact with you – a light turns on, makes a noise, or says something.  You have to complete quests in order to unlock spells that you need to finish the adventures.  The game is really fun, very interactive, and an excellent experience.

Great Wolf Lodge Poconos MagiQuest

Watch out for the crowds though!  The fact that there are so many people detracts from the experience a little bit.  You don’t really have to figure out what to do because chances are you have already seen someone do it before your turn.  And there are always lines for the Pixie Treehouse and the Dragon’s Lair where the adventures ended.

Great Wolf Lodge Poconos MagiQuestGreat Wolf Lodge Poconos MagiQuest

That said, I loved the game, and had a lot of fun playing it.  The technology involved with MagiQuest amazes me.  I played for hours; it’s definitely a fun way to pass the time!  I recommend it for people of all ages!  There were young kids playing, there were teenagers, and there were also adults playing!  So make sure you try MagiQuest the next time you visit Great Wolf Lodge!

Editor’s Note: Immediately after returning from our trip to Great Wolf Lodge, they announced an expansion of the game.  ShadowQuest is a new interactive adventure where guests embark on a journey to save the light.  Looks like we’ll be heading back to Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains in the near future.

DISCLOSURE: Our family’s stay at the Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains was part of a press trip, and received complimentary room, meals and entertainment vouchers.  However, all opinions are those of the author.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on Twitter and “like” our Facebook page, too.
